I just bought 2 Palm XT. One for self and one for husband. I was thinking about getting 2 Sandusj 2gb. After reading your problems installing one, I may have just changed my mind. I was under the impression that you get the disik and just have to put it in the handheld unit. Is it a major problem with installing? Can you use the disk like an extra hard drive on your computer? Read from and Write to? Waiting for your response. Thank you

So there are more little annoying technical details at play here. It seems that booting into GNU/Linux also resets the time back to 1942. Funny year. I guess the Palm is programmed to think that since it is 1942, there can't possible be any wifi, so it doesn't seem to work. Resetting the date manually made the wifi work again, hurrah!

The other option, which is probably not an option is to use PostgreSQL. I'm using it at work and it is extremely resistant to data loss and corruption. So much so that you can do things like copy the underlying filesystem while the database is running and have a perfectly intact restoration.

It's a bit more complicated than MySQL, though the basics are the same so getting up and running with something like Ruby On Rails is trivial.

So a little follow up here: I figured out that if I
chmod 0755 /tmp/
, then start MySQL, then
chmod 1777 /tmp/
once MySQL has started, things seem to work OK. Yes, this is bad.
